Do You Feel Safe When You See Police? No? Thank the War on Drugs!

We need to take a serious look at the dismal failure of the “War on Drugs” policy which is having devastating effects on our economy, our democracy, our crime rates, our prison population, our view of the law and those who enforce it; the list could go on forever!

The War on Drugs is one of the worst nightmares to have ever been visited upon the citizens of this country in the name of a government policy.  In addition to failing miserably, the policy has managed to physically or psychologically wound all who have come into contact with the programs that have been created to enforce the policy.

Police and federal agents, scarred by the policy, now spend a majority of their time enforcing the ever-expanding “thou shalt nots” of the War on Drugs.  Many who serve the law in this country no longer view themselves as “protectors” of citizens but as “hunters” preying upon citizens in an attempt to catch “policy breakers” in action.

We no longer trust the police in this country.  We’re told not to talk to them and NEVER open the door to the police because they can’t be trusted.  They’ll say anything to get inside your home and then proceed to do an illegal search; and, if they find anything (or plant anything)  they will lie if they have to in order to make the search legal!

People who once felt safe when they saw a policeman now shiver in fear of what he may do to them or their neighbors or friends like illegal searches, illegal stops and detainment, plant drugs in their cars or homes, anything that will help them meet their quotas for the week for drug busts!  Young men aged 16 to 30 driving along the road are regularly stopped for no legal reason only to have their person and vehicle searched illegally.

Due to some court cases, police are now allowed to lie to people in order to get the result they want.  They tell the young men that they stop illegally that  if they search the vehicle and find pot they will be arrested; but, IF they just show them what they have, it’s no big deal and they’ll let them go.  Yeah, right!  They end up being one more bust for the cop who stopped them illegally in the first place and then they have a criminal record that will present all kinds of problems for them in the future.  And, IF they don’t do as the cop says, the cop gets angry and plants the pot in the vehicle and the poor guy won’t stand a chance in court.  Cops regularly lie on the stand and the judges know it but do nothing to stop it.  All of these behaviors result in a total collapse of our legal system and all of it can be laid at the feet of the failed War on Drugs policy!

The “thou shalt nots” of the policy are the product of a segment of our society who consider themselves to be the keepers and enforcers of “values” for ALL!  According to them, they are the only ones who know the true “values” to which we all should aspire.  Anyone who dares to object to the “values to be held by all” as defined by the keepers and enforcers must be prepared to withstand the “hunt” which will ensue and possibly destroy their lives.

Unfortunately, not enough people have taken the time or have had the money to take on the “values keepers and enforcers.”  It is past the time for those of us who disagree with them to exercise our freedom of speech.  We need to point out that the “War on Drugs” is nothing but prohibition revisited so we can begin to repair the extensive damage this failed policy has had on our country.

We cannot continue to look the other way as the keepers and enforcers of the “values for ALL” run rampant with their Scarlett Letter “A” stamping anyone who disagrees with them as drug Abusers, Addicts and/or supporters of use of dangerous drugs by children.

The law needs to concentrate its efforts on murderers, rapists, thieves, Wall Street scams, etc., not on enforcing the beliefs of some who think that certain drugs should not be legal!  By having to enforce prohibition, the law is actually helping to create murderers and thieves!  Increases in crime rates are not due to drug pushers; they are due to the policy which creates drug pushers!

AND, by the way, the policy created a black market for drugs, the black market created drug money, drug money supports terrorism. . . not such a big leap after all!  🙂
